Despite being in the North West and remote from many clubs the Rally was attended by 418 Probus delegates representing 85 Clubs from all four Provinces. They arrived by car, bus, train and even by air in time for coffee and scones before the 12 noon start of the programme.
The Mayor of Londonderry, Councillor Helen Quigley, and the Mayor of Limavady, Councillor John McElhinney, welcomed the delegates.
Then Lord Eames gave a most inspirational address, and fully deserved the standing ovation which he received.
Everyone was now in good form for the splendid lunch provided by the hotel, during which a free raffle was held for prizes kindly donated by the hotel, other commercial businesses and members. Then followed a musical interlude from soloist Sioban Heaney and pianist Roy Adams. They found the delegates in fine voice in the “singalong” which ended with “Danny Boy”.
The Rally Business took up the remainder of the afternoon. During this a cheque for £450 was presented to Rotarian Howard Caskie - District Governor, Rotary International, District 1160 (Ireland) - for his charities of Barnardos and the Royal Marsden Hospital. This had largely been raised by a donation of £1.00 included in each delegate’s fee. Howard thanking the delegates spoke about the long standing relationship between Rotary and Probus, and expressed the hope that it would continue to grow from strength to strength.
Past District Governor Rotarian Edwin Dunlop presented the Dunlop Perpetual attendance Cup for the club with the greatest number of delegates travelling the greatest distance. This was won by the Probus Club of Limerick Castletroy. We also had reports from Rotarians Mary Sinnamon and Jerry O’Mahony on Probus in the North and South respectively; from PJ Cahill on last year’s Rally in Portlaoise; and a presentation by President Frank Marshall and Pat Nolan inviting all delegates to next year’s Rally to be held - over three days - in Kilkenny. The proceedings were brought to a close by President Noel Bogle, Londonderry Club, thanking all for coming and wishing them a safe journey home.
